Crab Hunts & Topshell Turvy

Field Support Day, Crab Hunts & Topshell Turvy!

Our Field Support Days are an opportunity for trained CoCoast volunteers to practise their survey skills and ask the CoCoast team any questions they may have whilst on the shore. So if you would like assistance with species ID, wanting to clarify bits of the survey protocol, or just wanting to do a transect with us nearby, this is the perfect opportunity! Whilst on the shore you will also have the chance to participate in our Crab Hunt and Topshell Turvy investigation!

Join us as we search the shore for different crab species and check them for egg masses and for the parasitic barnacle, Sacculina carcini. The data that we collect will help CoCoast to find out if crab species reproduce at different times around the UK.

We will also be on the lookout for topshells! Topshells are a common group of sea snail found on rocky shores in the UK. They can be found at low, mid and high shore grazing on algae. Different species of topshells breed at different times of the year, with temperature acting as an important cue in the timing of their reproduction. We want to find out whether timing differs across the UK and how warming waters may affect this.

If you would like to attend this field support day/crab hunt please let the team know so that we can provide you with specific details about the day such as times and where to meet. Email or call 07496 477417.
