And that's a Wrap!

A superb evening was had by all at our CoCoast MCS Final Celebration event in Swansea. The evening included a 3-course meal, plenty of wine, goody-bags, presentations and a successful (who would have thought the technology would actually work?!) live link up to the other national hub events for the Awards Ceremony led by our very own Dr. Jane Delany! Special thanks to Jo Ainsworth for her fantastic and inspirational presentation: "From Sky to Sea (via the Rocky Shore)"

Congratulations to all who received awards and a HUGE thank you to each and every volunteer for your involvement in and contribution to the Capturing our Coast project over the last 3 years. We couldn't have done it without you - volunteers most definitely rock! #VolunteersRock.

:

Spring is in the air?!

Regardless of the weather, I've managed to convince myself that it is indeed Spring (we'll ignore recently being snowed-off the shore in Pembrokeshire) and that means survey time is well and truly upon us!

I'm delighted to announce the next batch of CoCoast Field Events with a couple of fantastic Steepholm Island (http://www.steepholm.org.uk/) trips and a webinar thrown in for good measure...

Please take a look at the Marine Conservation Society Hub Calendar for further details.

I look forward to seeing you on the shore soon!

Happy New Year 2018!

A very happy new year to all our CoCoasters!

Apparently, the top new year's resolution in the UK is to "slim down" so our CoCoast surveys have done just that...

Introducing CoCoast LITE:

Do you struggle to find time to do a CoCoast survey? Can’t face the prospect of 10 whole quadrats? Or maybe you’re a weary super surveyor in a quadrat quandary? We have a solution for you!

CoCoast Lite is a way of contributing to the CoCoast general transect survey, without needing to complete 10 quadrats per transect.

We understand 10 quadrats is a lot, and can be overwhelming. However any data you submit can be used by our scientists, to increase our understanding of how marine life varies across the UK and how things are changing. So why not try a few and see how you get on?

For super surveyors that are completing 10 quadrats regularly, this may give you the opportunity to fit in a few more surveys and sky rocket your survey stats!

Complete 1-3 quadrats (or more if you like) using your chosen species pack and submit your data to be in for the chance to WIN exciting survey rewards including tickets to our CoCoast awards night!

If you have any queries or concerns about uploading your data, please contact cocoast@mcsuk.org and we will help you through the process.

There are plenty of upcoming opportunities for you to join us on the shore, just take a look at our hub calendar and get in touch at: cocoast@mcsuk.org.

If you can’t wait to get surveying or these dates / locations aren't suitable, just head down to your local shore and give it a go!

Beach Babies

Winter is still upon us, but it won't be long before signs of Spring start greeting our shores. As early as February, species start preparing for the reproductive season and start laying eggs. Our Beach Babies campaign is all about searching for and recording eggs of many species and other signs of reproduction in simple short surveys. As if we needed an excuse to get out on the shore and have a good hunt around!

If you'd like to know more about Beach Babies, please get in touch.

As for all our field events, if you plan to join us, please wear appropriate clothing - it does get cold at this time of year so plenty of layers, waterproofs and wellies or walking boots are definitely recommended. Where there is a suitable establishment nearby, you are welcome to join me for a hot beverage, following the field session to warm the cockles (ideally not the shelled variety...)

We look forward to seeing you on the shore soon and getting our 2018 surveys off to a raring start!

CoCoast MCS Autumn Events

I hope you've all enjoyed a fantastic summer. We've been busy planning our Autumn events, which is resulting in a busy, fun-packed calendar of activities! Check out the MCS Hub Calendar for our new events including:

  • Marine Invaders campaign - An exciting new campaign looking for non-native species on our shores. Events running between 8th - 11th September and onwards
  • Great British Beach Clean - As always, the third weekend in September (15th - 18th) is MCS's Great British Beach Clean which is set to be bigger and better than ever this year with a fantastic new partnership with Waitrose. There are numerous beach cleans happening during that weekend and throughout the year in our region and across the country. Visit www.mcsuk.org/beachwatch/events for further information
  • Our next round of Seaweeds vs Limpets surveys will be carried out during September / October continuing to quantify seaweeds and count and measure limpets
  • Micro Lives experiment will continue bi-monthly alongside crab and mollusc egg surveys
  • Training, Field Support Days & Social Events
  • The long awaited return of #Spermwatch!

Finally, I wanted to pass on a HUGE thank you to all of you who registered and took part in MCS's Plastic Challenge this year as we completely smashed all previous records. A total of 5035 people joined in, with a whopping 804 CoCoasters taking part - WOW! Our MCS Ambassador, Simon Reeve, had this to say: "Over FIVE THOUSAND of you went head to head with single-use plastic whilst speaking up about how ridiculously dependent we've become on the stuff. If you've started using less single-use plastic please keep going - let's build this movement to make our seas cleaner and safer."

Way to go CoCoasters and thank you for your support!

Welcome & Field Support Days

A big welcome to all newly trained MCS CoCoast Volunteers! You are now able to access the MCS Hub Events Calendar (as well as those for other hubs) which includes details of Field Support Days from now until June. Events, including further field support days, activities and social evenings will be updated as we progress through the year.

You can attend as many of the field support days as you wish, but please let me know if you are planning on joining me via cocoast@mcsuk.org - if I don't get a response from anyone for a certain date, I may not turn up!

Let me know if you have any queries and I look forward to seeing you in the field!
